I am Nicola, I am young, healthy and happy... but I hate the way I look, which unfortunately isn't uncommon, most people will hate something about their bodies, whether it be their hair, nose, skin, shape, weight... you get the idea.
Me: Skinny and Natural
What I hate about my body the most is in fact my weight, I am 8 1/2 stone and a UK size 6. I feel I'm too skinny.
My weight is natural as well, I can eat for England when I want to but I've always struggled to gain weight and I've only recently achieved a healthy weight for my height (according to my BMI anyway!!!), but yet I read in the media constantly that skinny girls look unhealthy and it's a bad example to people and skinny girls aren't "real women".
Take for example the controversy over the new Size 000 "trend" that has emerged, while I completely agree this is not a look people should be aiming for it does NOT deserve all of the anger and hatred directed towards it. The way I see is it is that if you are critisising one extreme for normalising something unhealthy then you should be critisising the other end of the spectrum for doing the same thing. Yet I walk into a shop and find size 20 clothes and larger, heck there are even shops specifically designed for the fuller figure!! I'm not saying it's wrong to do that but imagine if a shop were to open catering specifically for the skinnier frame, there would be an uproar!! But as people get larger, larger becomes normal and skinny becomes more and more of a taboo thing to be.
Alexa Chung: Reportedly Size 000
Although I don't believe it to be the original intention of the campaign, the #Fatkini trend further champions a fuller figure and even champions obesity, something which is dangerous, life threatening and can cause life long health problems for the sufferer. These symptoms are also true for a girl with an eating disorder at the other end of the spectrum, yet there's not #Thinkini because that would be a bad influence on girls. In fact I have seen a articles describing Size 000 Mary Carteris in a bikini as "Disturbing" and obese #Fatkini girls as "Real Women"!!!
#Fatkini: Championing Obesity?
It's something I like to call "Skinny Hate" which has left me insecure about the way I look. I hate that I can see some of my bones and that I don't have curves like a "real woman". But I am natural, I don't go to any lengths to ensure I stay thin, I just am! But my natural body shape isn't considered "real" as I'm not curvy or fuller.
I basically just wanted to point out that healthy should be what a Real Woman is, no one should be endangering their health either to obtain a look or because of the way they look. Nor should we be accepting that obesity is becoming more and more normal. I am skinny, but I am also natural and I shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of the way I look.
